    BCI inks MoU for cooperation with Law Council of Australia, signs partnership agreement

    On June 16 2010, the Bar Council of India has signed an MoU which identified specific areas of cooperations with the Law Council of Australia. In the intense deliberations at Canberra  that preceded the MoU, the Bar Council was represented by its Chairman Mr. Gopal Subramanium while the Law Council was represented by Mr. GlennFerguson, the President of the Law Society.

    The MoU states that the Bar Council of India and the Law Council of Australia will commence ongoing and effective dialogue with the following objectives:

    1. cross promotion of meetings and exchange of information regarding current issues of international significance;
    2. the issuing of invitations to, and the provision of an opportunity to participate in meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences in either jurisdiction which may be of benefit to the other;
    3. the issuing of invitations to the president of either organisation, and the presidents of the Bar Council of India and the Law Council of Australia to attend meetings of relevance;
    4. the identification of suitable joint projects and policy initiatives and their implementation.

    The  partnership agreement that followed the MoU said that the two parties wanted to establish a fìamework for:

    (a) the provision of continuing legal education for law graduates in India and Australia;

    (b) the provision of academic exchanges and research collaboration between universities with a particular focus on providing solution to legal problems of mutual concem;

    (c) the development of student exchanges, sponsorship and scholarship arrangements for the furtherance of a deeper understanding of our two legal systems;

    (d) the development of exchanges for legal professionals;

    (e) the provision of access to justice in India which will allow for a transparent, accountable and effective legal aid system and

    (f) regular consultation to ensure that the close relationship between the parties to this agreement is maintained and the objectives of this agreement are met.
